About Massage Therapists

Registered Massage Therapists specialize in therapeutic massage. Therapeutic massage is the manipulation of muscles and other soft tissues to promote health. Massage can reduce inflammation and muscle tension and relieve stress.

Target tissues may include muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, skin, joints, or other connective tissue, as well as lymphatic vessels, or gastrointestinal organs. Massage can be applied with the hands, fingers, elbows, knees, forearms, feet, or a massage device.

A visit to a Massage Therapist may be prescribed by your doctor for a physical injury or self-voluntary. Most massage sessions will not be covered by your insurance, but there are some circumstances where they are. If you sustain a workplace-related injury you may be eligible for Worker's Compensation which may cover massage therapy. If you're in a vehicular accident, your auto insurance may cover or mandate massage therapy.

In many US states, massage therapists are required to receive a certification or license to practice. In Canada, some provinces require Registered Massage Therapist certification and completion of a 2-3 year training course.

Because the art and science of massage is a globally diverse phenomenon, different legal jurisdictions sometimes recognize and license individuals with titles, while other areas do not. Examples are:

  • Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) in Canada
  • Remedial Massage Therapist (RMT) in New Zealand
  • Certified Massage Therapist (CMT) in New Zealand
  • Licensed Massage Practitioner (LMP)
  • Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT)
  • Licensed Massage and Bodywork Therapist (LMBT) in North Carolina
  • Therapeutic Massage Therapist (TMT) in South Africa

Registered Massage Therapists work in various medical settings and may travel to private residences or businesses. Massage Therapists can work with Physiotherapists, Orthopedic Surgeons, Sports Medicine Physicians, and Chiropractors.
